Culture
They say you should never show emotion in business. We built this agency knowing (and proving) that is exactly how you succeed.
Feelings drive behavior
By creating stories using words, sound, and images to attract and engage customers on a deeper level, we help your brand inspire people to feel in ways other brands don’t – the heart flutter, the heat of desire, the butterflies in the stomach, the lump in the throat.
Because emotions drive action, increase revenue and elevate sales.
From casual to commitment
A long-term relationship based on trust and loyalty? Umm… yes, please.
We help your brand evoke powerful emotions to forge stronger relationships between brand and customer, creating meaningful connections, greater differentiation and lasting market success.
Science + stories = yes
We use technology and data to uncover the most effective ways to anticipate and motivate customer responses. This allows us to better understand important, often unseen, patterns of consumer emotion and behavior.
Then, we find the sweet spot between the science of emotion and art of storytelling to ignite your branding and marketing strategy.
We get emotional about:
Making you a market success
As nimble, proactive, and independent thinkers driven to ensure positive financial results, we simultaneously support your desire to make a meaningful brand impact.
Collaborating
Getting to know your brand inspires what we bring to life, and how we do our best work. We collaborate closely with you. We listen to your ideas, share ours, and promise honesty, always.
Developing ideas that come from the heart
Humanizing your brand is key. Let’s not just create another company, product, or service. Let’s create a more personal, interactional experience inspired by feelings, and not just financial value.
Offering transparency and accountability
These words speak for themselves, yes?
Every great blockbuster
has an origin story
Sagon-Phior grew out of the movie industry. It is in our DNA. Our Chief Creative Officer, Rio Phior, was global Creative Director for Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Our CEO, Glenn Sagon, was Creative Director in the Worldwide Marketing Group for Columbia Pictures.
Together, and individually, Sagon and Phior have produced hundreds of campaigns for every major studio and marketed many of the biggest blockbusters and cult classics in history. Some include Star Wars, Return of The Jedi, Ghostbusters, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Raiders of The Lost Ark, Schindler’s List, Empire Strikes Back, Dances with Wolves, Home Alone, Edward Scissorhands, Jumanji, The Big Lebowski and Men in Black.

The golden rule
Early on Sagon and Phior learned the golden rule in Hollywood: Don’t just sell the movie; sell the movie the audience wants to see. Like movies, not all brands are inherently blockbusters. Often, we must find the most creative way to connect with an audience while still remaining true to the brand. It’s what Sagon-Phior has done for over 2000 brands, more than three decades.
Experience in the entertainment industry informs how we develop marketing and branding strategies. Emotion drives action. Logic plays a role, but creative content must captivate at a visceral level. Our whole team takes that rule to heart and applies it to every brand – it is unique, unexpected, and continues to drive significant ROI for every single client.

The saga continues…
In 1986, Rio Phior and Glenn Sagon, attracted to the creative freedom that autonomy brings, left their positions to join forces. Originally forming an entertainment boutique called Eidolon, they acquired every major entertainment studio as clients. Then they branched out to attract mainstream businesses wanting to incorporate entertainment sizzle into their marketing. By 1996, the Interpublic Group of Companies (IPG) acquired Sagon-Phior. They assisted IPG in developing creative marketing strategies for clients of the top ten agencies in the world.
By 2002, Glenn and Rio returned to the unbridled freedom of being an independent agency. They employed the best strategic and creative minds in the business. Our team has applied the philosophy of emotional marketing and branding with great success ever since.

Leadership
Some say we’re obsessed with creating ideas that affect the way people feel; we’d say, they’re not wrong.
Here we are.
Glenn Sagon
Glenn drives the marketing and branding strategies that build sales and revenue for Sagon-Phior’s clients. He is a creative thinker with keen business acumen, delivering measurable results and groundbreaking work for prestigious global brands.
Glenn drives the marketing and branding strategies that build sales and revenue for Sagon-Phior’s clients. He is a creative thinker with keen business acumen, delivering measurable results and groundbreaking work for prestigious global brands.
Glenn began his career as an art director for Foote, Cone & Belding, and soon after became an award-winning creative director for Columbia Pictures, producing some of the most memorable motion picture campaigns, including Ghostbusters, The Big Chill, Gandhi, The Karate Kid, and Tootsie. Through his time in the motion picture industry, he came to understand that every memorable brand begins with a powerful story; one that must connect emotionally with an audience in order to engage them – and that’s where Glenn begins with all projects and strategies.
Add that to Glenn’s knack for understanding human behavior, and the ability to foster synergy through observations, while giving space for the creative strengths of others … and you’ve got celebrated solutions, happy clients, and brand prestige. Glenn has always been driven by the desire to create something unexpected and new. His goal is not only to do outstanding work, but to consistently help clients achieve business success.
Recognized as one of the industry’s most innovative and effective marketing leaders, Glenn has received a plethora of marketing effectiveness and creative awards too many to list. He has been an associate professor at California State University Northridge, and UCLA, and a guest lecturer at Art Center College of Design, and USC (where his marketing approach, published in university textbooks, is required reading for the MBA/graduate level).
One truth, Glenn says, entertainment advertising taught him is that everything is an “experience,” from the hottest blockbuster movie down to the niche-iest of niche products or services. There are no small introductions, only small minds, no boring products, only boring people. And Glenn – or any project he touches – is anything but boring.
Rio Phior
As the co-founder of Sagon-Phior, Rio guides and directs the creative strategies for Sagon-Phior, helping brands develop, enhance, and grow their market share.
As the co-founder of Sagon-Phior, Rio guides and directs the creative strategies for Sagon-Phior, helping brands develop, enhance, and grow their market share.
And, trust us; this is a woman you want guiding your creative strategy. Her career as a fashion illustrator segued into an art director and copywriter for Wells, Rich, and Greene, then led to her position as Creative Director for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Being responsible for the worldwide branding, advertising, and merchandising of blockbuster films, she learned, firsthand, “You need fuel in the plane and a clear destination to soar creatively.” In her mind, the most important aspect of creativity is having enough data and a singular goal. She makes sure everyone at Sagon-Phior has both before taking off on any creative venture.
There is not enough space on this website to list all of the clients she has worked with, which range from Fortune 500 companies to foundations and entrepreneurial start-ups, or to list all of her awards and accolades, so let’s just say if there’s an industry accolade, she’s earned it, and if there’s a design or marketing award, she’s won it.
An associate professor at California State University Northridge and guest lecturer at Art Center, UCLA and USC Annenberg, Rio is a gifted communicator, and understands that branding, marketing, and advertising also begin with storytelling. So, that’s where she starts with all strategies.
Rio’s approach to the creative process is simple: 1 plus 1 can also equal 11… and never promise what you can’t deliver – then, always deliver more. She is driven by the desire to help transform people’s lives for the better, whether it be with an innovative product, service, brand or cause. And if you ask her what her favorite project is, it is always the one she’s working on right now—yours.

And for over twenty years, Bill has put that philosophy into action at Sagon-Phior, directing and developing global and national marketing and advertising campaigns, as well as packaging, broadcast, and digital campaigns for our most high-profile clients.
Bill knows no boundaries. He enjoys the rush of the creative process and the thrill of getting it right; to him, “getting it right” means crafting work that resonates with audiences while showcasing the absolute best of a brand. His unique ability to zero in on compelling messaging and captivating visuals comes from years of training in the entertainment industry.
As someone who never stops looking for ingenious new ways to bring sizzle to a legacy brand or spotlight a new one, Bill obsesses about not only the look and feel of his work, but also how it sounds; he graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and previously worked for Skywalker Sound as a recording engineer and producer. (Yes, that Skywalker Sound. May the Force be with you).

Chris is our resident science geek, and we couldn’t do any of what we do without him. He is an expert at discovering consumers’ hidden desires using psychology, big data, and computational linguistics. Based on large datasets of hundreds of millions of people, he converts real world human behavior into inferred psychological states; for brands, understanding the customer’s psychological and emotional drivers to join, try, purchase, or repurchase is key.
Put simply, Chris helps Sagon-Phior’s clients move the merch.
Chris connects consumer-relationship data to find advantages in clients’ marketing initiatives, identifying and outlining the psychological, motivational, and emotional reasons for consumer interest and purchase decisions. His algorithmic process is akin to how companies like Netflix and Amazon understand their consumers’ preferences, injecting personality metrics into software and organizations with methods that measure the subconscious mind.
Driven by the desire to serve, and not sell, Chris switched his original career focus from building marketing and advertising technology to product and operations. Realizing that media was never a clear means to creating a successful business model, he found Product and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) a better pathway; by researching language and design thinking, CRM and look-alike CRM data can be more predictive and prescriptive.
Chris attended Louisiana State University majoring in Abstract Mathematics, and Harvard Business School’s Disruptive Innovation executive education program. He also, for fun (his words, not ours), studied economics at Tulane University. Chris applies that vast storehouse of knowledge in the pursuit of answering one simple question: “Why do people buy?”

Peter believes that every idea must be viewed in the environment it is intended for. This is the reason Peter is so good at creating experiences. From his first job at Disney Imagineering, Peter started making small movies and recording music for the theme park. From there he joined Sagon-Phior in their early days helping to develop the launch of Fox Broadcasting, the brand transformation of Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) and collaborating with agency founders Rio and Glenn to produce many notable motion picture campaigns for Warner Bros, Universal Studios, Colombia Pictures and Paramount Pictures.
With a history of blockbuster campaigns under his belt, Peter joined DreamWorks as head of Creative for their Consumer Products division, working closely with the major retailers developing global licensing programs. At DreamWorks, he was responsible for building the brands and screen-to-retail strategies for Saving Private Ryan, Antz, Prince of Egypt, Shrek, among others.
Peter went on to become the Senior Vice President of Creative at 20th Century Fox, as part of the most successful motion picture marketing team in decades, directing creative advertising for over 25 movies simultaneously, including Avatar, X-Men, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Moulin Rouge, Planet of the Apes, Ice Age, Cheaper By The Dozen, Master & Commander and Cast Away, just to name a few.
And in one of those “life comes full circle” moments, Peter has re-joined Sagon-Phior to work alongside their strategy and creative teams to help create brand experiences. He will tell you that his creativity comes out in music, graphics, filmmaking, posters, software design, and marketing strategies.

Every day, Russ is driven to find the simplest, most elegant solution to a problem; in fact, he prefers seeing “problems” as puzzles — there is always a solution if you have the right combination of imagination and patience.

Carol knows that marketing is most successful when it contains a core product truth; a truth that resonates deeply with consumers. As such, with expertise in qualitative, quantitative, and secondary research, she’s particularly adept at finding the hidden nuggets of data that can inform—and change—a brand’s direction.
In other words, Carol is our top research and knowledge-management specialist, working hand-in-hand with account planners, clients, and creatives to help them understand emotional and behavioral purchasing habits, and then translating how brands can use that information to succeed in the marketplace.
For Carol, finding the fact, the information, is a creative quest. And it is a quest she has been on for more than 30 years; her experience in the information world providing business-intelligence and critical research services for major blue-chip corporations includes Dun & Bradstreet, the JWT Information Center in New York and the North American Knowledge Center at JWT, and CNR Partners (a think-tank venture between Citibank, NYNEX & RCA).
As Zora Neale Hurston said, “Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.” For Carol, every day is a different day filled with that challenge of finding the facts and information requested – and the truth in it. If the saying “knowledge is power” is true (and, come on, it totally is), no one helps make brands become more powerful than Carol.

Humble brag
Our agency has been the recipient of over 150 national and international awards for creativity and marketing effectiveness. But we don’t really care about that (well, maybe a little). All we care about is that you win.
“We had two goals – developing a strategic direction to rebrand the company through a new website seeded with original content, and targeting two very different audiences with powerful messaging, stories, and a dynamic user interface. This continues to make a significant and positive impact in awareness, engagement and conversions.“

Legacy clients
We’d like to thank all the wonderful client partnerships we’ve had over the years, but this would scroll forever. So, this is small sampling. It takes teamwork to make success happen. We continue to support the United Way, Cancer Support Community, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, Race to Erase MS and helped to develop the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Initiative of the National Charity League.
